MODFLOW-SURFACT Flow groundwater simulation software features many robust methods and enhanced simulation capabilities for handling complex saturated/unsaturated subsurface flow and transport processes. Based on the USGS modular groundwater flow model, MODFLOW.

  • Dynamic memory allocation permits unlimited problem dimensions
  • Modular structure allows further development of additional simulation capabilities to provide a comprehensive, general purpose simulator within the MODFLOW framework

Recent Additions

  • The powerful PCG5 solver add-on is up to 20 times faster than the PCG4 solver thanks to its advanced computational techniques
  • The Recharge Package (RSF4) has been modified to include zonal input of recharge with zonal recharge values provided via a separate recharge time-series (RTS) file that is independent of the stress-period setup for varying boundary conditions
  • The Evapotranspiration (ET) packages EVT and ETS1 (referred to as ET2 in MODFLOW-SURFACT) have been modified to include zonal input of ETmax values provided via a separate ET time-series (ETS) file that is independent of the stress-period setup for varying boundary conditions

Robustness & Efficiency

Adaptive time stepping and output control package, ATO4, provides great robustness and efficiency in all flow simulations, cutting the time-step size when the simulation becomes difficult, and increasing it when the difficulty passes. Also provides improved organization and control of simulation output

The included conjugate gradient solution package, PCG4, provides an alternative to the available solvers in MODFLOW while the powerful PCG5 solver add-on is up to 20 times faster thanks to its advanced computational techniques



Dynamic Memory Allocation

Windows systems allocate available memory to all applications open on the computer. Efficient use of memory by MODFLOW- SURFACT maximizes available memory space for other user applications.

Due to dynamic allocation of memory, simulation problem dimensions are limited only by available computer memory, or prohibitively long simulation times for large, complex problems.
